Tema Secondary School has booked a return to the One-Eighth stage of the 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), taking another step towards a title dream that was painfully cut short last year.
The school led from the opening round and never relinquished its advantage, finishing with 42 points ahead of St. Paul’s SHS, Denu and Tarkwa SHS.
But TEMASCO’s march to victory was not entirely straightforward. In Round Three, all three schools found themselves on level ground, but for all the wrong reasons, as a common mistake left them without a single point.
TEMASCO had already established control of the contest by then. They opened with 19 points, extended their lead to 26 in Round Two and, despite the unexpected setback in Round Three, remained ahead of their rivals.
The pressure intensified in the closing rounds, but TEMASCO kept its composure. They added 16 points in Round Four before finishing on 42 points to top the contest and book their place in the next round of the competition.

St. Paul’s SHS, Denu, stayed within touching distance for much of the contest and brought plenty of personality to the auditorium. Their cheers and banter kept the atmosphere lively, but they ultimately fell short of the leaders, finishing on 31 points.
Tarkwa SHS finished third with 29 points, narrowly missing out on second place to St. Paul’s. For Temasco, the qualification carries an added sense of unfinished business.
Last year, their campaign ended in heartbreak, denying them a place beyond the stage they had hoped to conquer.
