Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe has urged domestic airlines to reduce airfares following government’s decision to waive import duties on aircraft parts.
He said the duty exemptions were introduced to help airlines lower their operating costs, and the savings should also benefit passengers.
Mr. Nikpe made the call at the unveiling of Africa World Airlines’ (AWA) new 102-seater Embraer E190 aircraft.
He urged domestic airlines, particularly AWA, to reflect the benefits of the duty waivers in the fares charged to passengers.

“We want to seize this opportunity to appeal to all the airlines, especially the leading domestic airlines, to also look at their affairs and let it reflect on the Ghanaian traveller, so that our people can also enjoy some reduction in airfares.”
The Minister said lower operating costs should create room for airlines to make domestic air travel more affordable and accessible to Ghanaians.
He also welcomed AWA’s decision to introduce the larger aircraft, saying the increased passenger capacity could encourage more people to choose air travel for domestic journeys.
The new Embraer E190, which can carry 102 passengers, is expected to help AWA increase its capacity and strengthen connectivity on domestic routes.
Mr. Nikpe said the combination of lower operating costs and increased passenger capacity presents an opportunity for airlines to make domestic air travel more accessible to the public.
