Chelsea have completed the signing of Italian defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta, making the versatile full-back the club’s first arrival of the summer transfer window.
The Premier League side confirmed the transfer on Wednesday, with the 21-year-old putting pen to paper on a seven-year contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2033. The deal is reported to be worth around €55 million, underlining Chelsea’s long-term investment in one of Italy’s brightest defensive talents.
In a statement announcing the transfer, the club said “Chelsea is delighted to announce the signing of Italian international Marco Palestra from Serie A club Atalanta.“ The defender is expected to link up with his new teammates when preparations begin for the new season under head coach Xabi Alonso.
Palestra joins Chelsea after an outstanding campaign in Serie A that saw his reputation soar across Europe. His consistency, defensive maturity and attacking threat from wide areas made him one of the most sought-after young defenders on the continent before Chelsea secured his signature.
Inter Milan reportedly approach the defender in hope of securing his services before Chelsea moved swiftly to seal the deal.
Reward for Outstanding Development
Although contracted to Atalanta, Palestra spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Cagliari, where he enjoyed a breakthrough year. He featured in 37 league matches, impressing with his ability to operate comfortably as both a full-back and wing-back on either flank.

His performances earned widespread recognition and culminated in him being named Serie A Defender of the Year, an accolade that highlighted his rapid development despite his young age.
Palestra’s impressive domestic form also opened the door to the international stage. Earlier this year, he made his senior debut for Italy before quickly earning a second appearance for the Azzurri, further strengthening his credentials as one of the country’s most promising defenders.
Chelsea’s recruitment team has been tracking the youngster’s progress closely, believing his versatility, athleticism and tactical intelligence make him an ideal fit for Alonso’s football philosophy.

Speaking after completing the move, Palestra expressed his delight at joining the London club and revealed the ambition of the project played a significant role in his decision. “A lot of things convinced me to join Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world,” he said.
The Italian international also admitted he is eager to begin work with his new teammates after sensing the club’s desire to bring him to England. “I’m very excited to get started. Palestra also praised Chelsea’s squad and spoke positively about his conversations with Alonso.
