Accra Sports Stadium has regained CAF approval to host international matches after months of renovation, allowing Ghana to stage home fixtures in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The decision clears the way for the Black Stars to return to the venue after its previous certification was withdrawn.
Ghana are scheduled to host Gambia in Accra on September 27, three days after their away qualifier against Ivory Coast. CAF’s approval gives the team a permanent home venue, although concerns about the stadium’s condition remain. Earlier this month, Berekum West MP Dickson Kyere-Duah described the facility as a “death trap,” highlighting continuing criticism of Ghana’s sports infrastructure.

Wider use
The approval could also make Accra Sports Stadium a regional venue for teams without certified facilities:
- Niger have received permission to host their 2027 AFCON qualifiers in Accra.
- Somalia has reportedly asked the National Sports Authority to use the stadium for its home matches.
Niger are in Group A with Morocco, Gabon and Lesotho, while Somalia share Group C with Ghana, Ivory Coast and Gabon. This could result in several qualifying matches involving teams from Ghana’s wider group being played in Accra.
The 2027 AFCON will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from June 19 to July 17, 2027. The top two teams in each qualifying group will qualify for the tournament.
