President John Dramani Mahama, Ghana’s AU Champion for Reparatory Justice, will this evening address a high-level side event at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on the next steps towards advancing reparatory justice.
The address, under the theme “From Commitments to Action on Reparatory Justice: Advancing International Cooperation for the Return and Restitution of Cultural Properties and Heritage,” follows the historic UN resolution adopted in March recognising the enslavement and trafficking of Africans as among the gravest crimes against humanity.
The event is co-hosted by Ghana, Germany and France, with eleven other Heads of State, Heads of Government and senior leaders expected to contribute to the discussions.

The engagement builds on President Mahama’s Next Steps High-Level Consultative Conference on Reparatory Justice, held in Accra from June 17 to 19, 2026, which brought together African and Caribbean leaders to strengthen a common position on reparations.
At the conference, President Mahama and Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados reaffirmed a united African-Caribbean position on reparatory justice and called for greater international cooperation in addressing the enduring consequences of slavery and colonialism.
The Accra conference also paved the way for the establishment of three key bodies: the Global Advisory Panel on Reparatory Justice, the Expert Panel on the Restitution of Cultural Artefacts, and the Global Legal Panel on Reparatory Justice.
President Mahama’s engagement at the UN is expected to build on these initiatives and further advance international cooperation on reparatory justice, including the return and restitution of African cultural properties and heritage.
