Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin says Parliament will investigate the reported US$1.7 billion, equivalent to about GH¢22 billion, loss linked to the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).
He said the investigation would help determine whether the amount represents an actual financial loss or a cost incurred by the government in operating the programme.
The Speaker’s comments follow a motion filed by the Minority in Parliament seeking an inquiry into the matter.
The Minority is also asking Parliament to summon the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, to explain the transactions linked to the programme.
Mr Bagbin said the motion was received by his office on August 21, 2026, and that he intended to admit it for consideration.

He said Parliament must resolve the disagreement over whether the reported amount should be described as a financial loss or a policy cost.
According to him, the parliamentary process would give lawmakers an opportunity to examine the transactions and provide clarity on the issue.
“This House will have the opportunity to go through it,” Mr Bagbin said.
He added that Ghanaians would have the opportunity to listen to the arguments, examine the facts and make their own decisions.
The reported loss has generated controversy, with differing views emerging over the financial impact of the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.
The parliamentary inquiry is expected to examine the transactions and establish how the reported figure was arrived at.
