Sankofa Medical Charities, a US-based non-governmental organization, has donated medical equipment to the Dialysis Unit of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, TTH. The donation includes fifteen mechanical recliners that can also be used as beds and four dialysis machines.
The dialysis machines will be sent to the Yendi Government Hospital and the Oti Region.
According to the organization, the support forms part of efforts to assist TTH and its peripheral hospitals to improve treatment for patients suffering from kidney and kidney-related diseases.
Presenting the items, Secretary of Sankofa Medical Charities, Dr. Al-Majeed Adam, said running a hospital effectively requires the right equipment. He noted that underserved facilities often lack essential medical tools, and that well-equipped hospitals lead to more accurate diagnoses and reduced patient waiting times.

“When I got to the ER, I saw a lot of patients on the floor with blood everywhere. It broke my heart. I spoke to the doctor in charge and he told me they did not have enough beds, so patients had to wait on the floor. As an organization, Sankofa works to serve underserved areas. We have mechanical chairs and recliners in storage in Accra that we keep for places in need. But after seeing this, I realized this is an emergency. So we have brought 15 recliner chairs and 4 dialysis machines. About 11 to 12 of the chairs will go to the Emergency Unit, and the rest will go to the Oncology Department” Dr Adam said
Dr. Adam also disclosed that plans are underway to open a dialysis unit at the Yendi Government Hospital.
“The dialysis machines have not been used for the past two years. We are asking that they be serviced first. After servicing, we will decide whether to send them to Yendi or leave them at Tamale Teaching Hospital. Tamale Teaching Hospital already has nine dialysis machines, but sub-regions like Yendi do not have any facility at all. They serve a large catchment area and patients have to travel all the way here. What we are proposing is to establish a dialysis center in Yendi. Staff from Yendi can come to Tamale Teaching Hospital for training. This will reduce the pressure on Tamale and improve access for people in Yendi and this is what Sankofa is working on now”.
Director of Medical Affairs at Tamale Teaching Hospital, Prof. Alhassan Abdul-Mumin, thanked the organization for the gesture.
Sankofa Medical Charities provides medical education, care and supplies to underserved communities in Africa and Atlanta. Its services include kidney care, diabetes screening and the provision of essential equipment such as ambulances and hospital beds.
