Member of the National Democratic Congress, NDC, Communications Team, Ewura Adams Karim, has defended the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy while acknowledging concerns over the impact of the double-track system on the quality of education.
Speaking on the ‘Headlines’ segment of the GTV Breakfast Show, Mr. Karim said Free SHS is a right that should be accessible to all eligible Ghanaian students.
“Free education is a right. I don’t see why people shouldn’t enjoy it.”
He stressed that the NDC does not oppose the Free SHS policy but has raised concerns about aspects of its implementation. According to him, some of the issues identified at the time were not adequately addressed before the policy was expanded.

Mr. Karim argued that increased investment in educational infrastructure and STEM education is necessary to provide schools with the facilities, equipment and resources required to support effective teaching and learning.
He cited the construction of e-blocks as one of the measures aimed at addressing infrastructure gaps in the education sector.
He also mentioned plans to upgrade some Category B schools to Category A status, describing the move as part of efforts to ease pressure on highly sought-after Category A institutions.
Mr. Karim maintained that the expansion of infrastructure must go hand in hand with Free SHS to ensure that increased access to secondary education does not undermine the quality of teaching and learning.
