President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister for Finance to release GHC 300 million from the Contingency Fund to support urgent flood relief and mitigation measures following severe flooding in parts of Accra and other communities in the southern sector after hours of heavy rainfall.
The directive, announced by the Presidency on Tuesday (30 June), forms part of government’s response to the widespread impact of the flooding, which has displaced residents and affected several communities.
According to the statement, GHC 150 million will be used for immediate relief support for affected individuals and communities, while the remaining GHC 150 million will go into flood mitigation interventions aimed at reducing future flooding incidents.
As part of the response measures, President Mahama has also directed the deployment of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to support ongoing rescue and relief operations.
