The Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced that full funding for the proposed Accra–Kumasi Expressway will be secured by the end of the year.
According to the Finance Minister, the project could become one of the first major infrastructure projects in Ghana to have its full funding secured before construction begins.
In a Facebook post, Dr Forson said the government would not borrow money to finance the transformational road project.
“By the end of this year, the full funding for the transformational Accra-Kumasi Expressway will be ready,” he said.
“This could be the first time funds for a project of this scale have been fully secured before construction begins. For the avoidance of doubt, not a single pesewa will be borrowed for this project,” he added.
The announcement comes as the Ghana Armed Forces engineers make significant progress in clearing the corridor earmarked for the proposed 176-kilometre Accra–Kumasi Expressway.

The military engineering team has so far cleared 170 kilometres of the corridor, leaving just six kilometres to be completed.
In an update shared on X on Thursday, September 3, the Ghana Armed Forces said the corridor-clearing exercise had entered its final stage as engineers advanced towards Sawua.
“The finish line is in sight. Out of 176 kilometres of challenging terrain, just 6 km remain!” the Ghana Armed Forces stated.
The latest progress represents a major improvement from the figures recorded earlier this year. As of June 25, 2026, approximately 89.5 kilometres of the corridor, representing 50.9 per cent of the total stretch, had been cleared.
The corridor-clearing exercise is a crucial preparatory stage for the project as it creates the necessary right of way ahead of major construction works.
When completed, the Accra–Kumasi Expressway is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Ghana’s two major cities, reduce travel time and traffic congestion, and facilitate the efficient movement of people and goods.
The securing of full funding and the near completion of the corridor-clearing exercise are expected to move the major infrastructure project closer to the construction phase.
