The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has given traders occupying unauthorised bus stops across the Accra metropolis a 48-hour ultimatum to stop trading and vacate the locations ahead of an intensified enforcement exercise.

The directive is aimed at restoring order, reducing traffic congestion and ensuring the proper use of public spaces across the capital.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, November 4, the Assembly said the decision follows complaints from commercial drivers over the increasing occupation of designated bus stops by traders and hawkers.

According to the AMA, the practice obstructs designated stopping points, making it difficult for commercial vehicles to pick up and drop off passengers while disrupting the movement of pedestrians.

The Assembly further explained that the situation contributes to traffic congestion and forces commuters to board and alight from vehicles at unsafe locations, increasing their exposure to road accidents.

As part of efforts to address the situation, the AMA said the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has already commenced enforcement activities to remove traders occupying unauthorised spaces at some major locations in the capital.

The affected areas include the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, Achimota and parts of the Central Business District (CBD).

The Assembly has therefore directed all traders operating at unauthorised bus stops to cease their activities and vacate the affected locations within 48 hours.

It warned that enforcement activities would be intensified after the deadline, adding that persons who fail to comply with the directive will face sanctions in accordance with the Assembly’s by-laws.

The AMA also cautioned traders against returning to locations that have already been cleared, stressing that offenders could face further enforcement action, including prosecution.

The statement, signed by Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Affairs, on behalf of the Metro Chief Executive, reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to restoring order and ensuring that public spaces serve their intended purposes.

The exercise is expected to improve access to designated bus stops, promote safer passenger movement and ease congestion at major transport points across Accra.
