Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has warned that officials of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) could face tough bail conditions in the future if the standards being applied to some former government officials continue.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, Mr Afenyo-Markin said public officials in the current administration should consider the possible consequences of the bail conditions being imposed on persons under investigation.
He said the conditions could set a precedent that may later affect officials of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) returns to power.
Mr Afenyo-Markin specifically referred to GoldBod officials in connection with what he described as about GH¢22 billion in losses. He warned that the treatment of officials today could determine how officials of a future government are treated.

He criticised what he described as excessive bail conditions imposed on some former government officials and called for investigations to be conducted in line with established legal principles rather than political considerations.
According to him, the issue goes beyond the individuals currently being investigated and concerns the standards being established for future cases.
The Minority has consistently raised concerns about investigations into alleged wrongdoing under the previous administration, accusing the government of using the process to target political opponents.
The government, however, maintains that the investigations are aimed at promoting accountability and recovering state resources.
Mr Afenyo-Markin’s latest comments have therefore added to the growing political debate over the conduct of investigations, bail conditions and accountability under the current administration.
