Media scholar and author, Assistant Professor Wunpini F. Mohammed, has launched her latest book, Media, Culture and Decolonization: Re-righting the Subaltern Histories of Ghana, and unveiled the Bilchinsi Scholarship Fund at an event held in Tamale.
The launch, held on Saturday, brought together academics, media practitioners, traditional leaders, politicians, members of the Dagbon Youth Association, students and the general public to celebrate what Professor Wunpini described as “the people’s book” (Zaa Kundi).
Addressing the gathering, Professor Wunpini said the publication explores the intersection of media, culture and decolonisation, while sparking critical conversations on African knowledge systems, identity and media representation.
She explained that the book seeks to preserve Ghana’s cultural heritage and highlight the contributions of individuals who have shaped the country’s media landscape.
Professor Wunpini encouraged young women to pursue their ambitions with confidence, drawing inspiration from women who have broken barriers in academia, leadership and other fields.
She also announced the establishment of the Bilchinsi Scholarship Fund, an initiative aimed at supporting the education of girls in Dagbon.

According to her, the fund has already received generous contributions from individuals and prominent personalities committed to helping deserving girls access education and achieve their dreams.
The Member of Parliament for Karaga and former Minister for Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, described the book as a timely contribution that should encourage society to reflect on Ghana’s history, identity and development.
He also called on residents of Tamale to promote peace and unity, expressing concern over recent security developments, including the withdrawal of the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team from the metropolis.
Dr. Amin Adam warned that without harmony and collective support, poverty and underdevelopment would continue to hinder progress.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Students Loan Trust Fund, Hajia Saajida Shiraz, commended Professor Wunpini for producing a scholarly work that contributes to national development and intellectual discourse.
Former Northern Regional Director of Education, Alhaji Mohammed Cambodia, also praised the author for her commitment to education, research and the promotion of African history and culture.
The launch ended with calls for greater investment in education, the preservation of cultural identity and the empowerment of young girls through opportunities that can transform their lives.
