President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that government will transform the reclaimed Agbogloshie site into an industrial park, with plans to establish a major textile factory to create jobs for young Ghanaians.
He said the planned development forms part of the government’s broader vision to turn the area, which has long been associated with severe sanitation and environmental challenges, into a productive economic zone.
President Mahama made the announcement when he commissioned the evacuation of the massive waste heaps from Agbogloshie to the Adepa Engineered Landfill Site near Nsawam in the Eastern Region.
A drone-assisted AI assessment estimates the waste at about one million tonnes, with the entire evacuation expected to be completed within 90 days.
President Mahama said clearing the waste would pave the way for the proposed Agbogloshie Urban Land Renewal Project and the development of the industrial park.
He said the planned textile factory would provide employment opportunities for young people and help give the reclaimed land a productive economic purpose.
The President said the exercise would also eliminate the open dumping and burning that have created longstanding public health and environmental hazards in the area.
The evacuation is being led by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces and the District Road Improvement Project (DRIP).

The Ministry of Finance is providing funding, with additional support from the District Assemblies Common Fund.
Heavy equipment acquired under DRIP, including tipper trucks, excavators, bulldozers and wheel loaders, will be deployed for the exercise.
The Ghana Armed Forces, particularly the 48 Engineer Regiment, will provide operational and engineering support.
President Mahama said the exercise demonstrates government’s ability to mobilise its own resources and institutions to tackle major national challenges.
He said the evacuated waste would be transported to the Adepa Engineered Landfill Site for controlled disposal, compaction and covering under appropriate environmental safeguards.
The President also stressed the need to protect residents, road users and communities along the haulage routes, directing that the bulk of the transportation take place at night in line with the government’s 24-Hour Economy Initiative.
He appealed to residents of Old Fadama and Agbogloshie to cooperate with the military, DRIP operators and assembly teams throughout the exercise.
President Mahama said the ultimate objective is to reclaim the land, protect public health and create new opportunities for industrial development and employment.
