Phil Foden has committed his future to Manchester City by signing a new four-year contract extension on Wednesday, July 22, that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until the June, 2030.

The 26-year-old midfielder, who joined City’s academy as a nine-year-old, has extended an association with the club that has lasted almost two decades and seen him develop from a highly rated academy prospect into one of the most decorated players in Manchester City’s history.

Foden made his senior debut under Pep Guardiola in 2017 and has since become a key figure in one of the most successful eras in the club’s history. His new deal ensures he will remain part of City’s next phase under new manager Enzo Maresca.

The Stockport-born midfielder has collected 20 major trophies with City, including six Premier League titles, five League Cups, three FA Cups, three Community Shields, the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

espite his remarkable success at club level, Foden endured a difficult period internationally in 2026 after missing the FIFA World Cup squad. England head coach Thomas Tuchel opted to use Morgan Rogers and Jude Bellingham in the attacking midfield role, leaving Foden out of the tournament squad.

His absence from England’s World Cup plans raised questions about his form and role, but City remain convinced that he still has many years at the highest level ahead of him.

A City Graduate Becomes a Club Great

Foden’s journey remains one of the most celebrated academy success stories in modern football. After progressing through City’s youth system, he broke into Guardiola’s first team and gradually became an important part of the squad.

His technical ability, versatility and creativity have allowed him to operate in several attacking roles, including on the wing, as a central attacking midfielder and in deeper midfield positions.

The midfielder has recorded more than 100 Premier League goal contributions for Manchester City, becoming only the sixth player in the club’s history to reach that milestone. He is also among the select group of players to have scored 100 or more goals for City across all competitions.

His most outstanding individual campaign came during the 2023/24 season, when he emerged as the driving force behind City’s record-breaking fourth consecutive Premier League title.

Foden scored 19 league goals that season and was rewarded with some of English football’s biggest individual honours, winning the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award, the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award and the Premier League Player of the Season prize.

Foden Excited by Maresca Reunion

Reflecting on the extension, Foden described remaining at City as a fulfilment of a childhood ambition and expressed his excitement about working under Maresca again. “Committing my future to City means everything to me,” the midfielder said. “Playing for this club is all I’ve ever wanted to do and it’s always an honour to wear the shirt.”

Foden previously worked with Maresca when the Italian was among Guardiola’s coaching staff and believes the former Chelsea head coach played an important role in his development during City’s historic treble-winning season.

He added that he was looking forward to the next stage of his career and continuing to improve alongside a new generation of players at the club.

Manchester City Director of Football Hugo Viana praised Foden’s contribution and highlighted his dedication beyond his natural talent.

Viana said Foden represents everything positive about the club’s academy system, describing him as a unique talent whose creativity has brought joy to supporters.

He also emphasised that Foden’s achievements have been built on discipline, humility and a willingness to learn from coaches and experienced teammates.

New Era Built Around Foden

Foden’s contract extension comes at a period of transition for Manchester City, with several experienced figures from Guardiola’s successful era moving on and a younger squad beginning to take shape.

City believe Foden can become one of the leaders of that next generation, having already gained invaluable experience from playing alongside legends such as David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Rodri.

Although his recent seasons have been affected by injuries and inconsistent form, his influence and commitment to City have remained unquestioned.

The club’s decision to secure his future until 2030 reflects their belief that Foden still has significant room for growth and can continue to deliver at the highest level.

With close to a decade of first-team football already behind him and a trophy collection that rivals some of the greatest players in City’s history, Foden’s status as a club icon is already firmly established.

The next challenge will be translating that success into a new era of dominance while proving that he remains one of England’s most gifted attacking talents.
