Stakeholders in Ghana’s health care sector have lauded the government for its efforts in launching the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares) aimed at improving health outcomes, especially for chronic diseases

Describing the programme as a useful game changer, Dr. Paa Kobina Forson, the Programs Director for the BEAT Breast Cancer Project at JHPIEGO, emphasised the need for retooling hospitals with diagnostic machines in major teaching hospitals, including Tamale Teaching Hospital.

He expressed hope that the program will reach patients who are financially struggling and truly need some medical care that they are unable to finance.

Speaking at a media training in the Northern Region, Dr. Paa Kwabena Forson noted that access to healthcare services and some limitations for cancer diagnostics is nothing to write home about.

He called for urgent intervention as the government rolls out the MahamaCares program.

“Right now, when it comes to radiotherapy services, a patient who is receiving care at Tamale Teaching Hospital may have to go to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi or Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra,” he bemoaned.
