President John Dramani Mahama will on Monday, September 14, 2026, be at Kwaso, near Ejisu in the Ashanti Region, where he is expected to preside over the formal handover of 175.6 kilometres of cleared right-of-way for the construction of the much-anticipated Accra-Kumasi Expressway.
The clearance has been undertaken by Engineers of the Ghana Armed Forces and represents a major preparatory milestone towards the construction of the 198.7-kilometre expressway.
The right-of-way essentially refers to the land legally acquired and reserved for the construction, operation, maintenance and possible future expansion of a road.
What makes today’s event significant is that the cleared corridor removes one of the major physical hurdles ahead of construction.
The proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway will be Ghana’s first modern six-lane, bi-directional Class A expressway. Government says the new alignment will reduce the current distance between Accra and Kumasi from about 250 kilometres to 198.7 kilometres.

It is also projected to halve travel time between the two cities and reduce transport costs by nearly 40 percent.
The project forms part of government’s Big Push infrastructure programme and is expected to create more than 30,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction.
The expressway is planned to have major interchanges, service areas, bridges and automated tolling facilities, with the route passing through the Greater Accra, Eastern and Ashanti Regions.
Parliament’s Roads and Transport Committee has described the project as a priority national infrastructure undertaking, while the Finance Minister has indicated that it will be fully government-funded under the Big Push programme, with an expected completion period of three years.
For motorists, businesses and communities along the Accra-Kumasi corridor, today’s handover therefore marks an important step from planning and preparatory works towards the actual construction of what government describes as one of Ghana’s most significant infrastructure investments.
