Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, has met with the Bawku Naba, Zugraan Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, to discuss ways to bring lasting peace to the conflict-ridden Bawku area. The meeting, which included other Northern MPs, aimed to address the protracted chieftaincy conflict between the Kusasi and Mamprusi ethnic groups.
Ayariga, who is also the Majority Leader, reaffirmed his commitment to resolving the conflict, stating that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government remains dedicated to achieving justice and sustainable peace in the region. The Bawku Naba expressed gratitude for the visit and assured Ayariga of his support for the peace efforts.
The conflict in Bawku has resulted in numerous deaths and displacement, with recent violence claiming at least 41 lives since October 2024. Ayariga’s residence was attacked during the unrest, and he has condemned the actions of some law enforcement officers.

During the meeting, the delegation formally greeted the Bawku Naba and conveyed their respect to the Kusasi Traditional Council. Discussions centred on the need for sustained collaboration between traditional authorities and political leaders to advance peace and harmony in Bawku and its surrounding communities.

Mr Ayariga expressed appreciation to the Bawku Naba for the warm reception and what he described as his wise counsel, reaffirming the delegation’s commitment to supporting all genuine efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace, stability and development in the area.
