The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Majority Caucus has replaced Bawku Central legislator Mahama Ayariga as Majority Leader, following an unexpected executive reshuffle.
In a sudden shake-up targeting key positions, President John Dramani Mahama has moved Ayariga away from legislative leadership, nominating him instead as the Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs.
Taking over the crucial role of Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business is Builsa North MP James Agalga.
While initial political commentary framed the sudden exit as an aggressive removal, official statements indicate the decision is part of a broad administrative realignment designed to strengthen government delivery. Ayariga’s transition from controlling the floor of Parliament to a ministerial role leaves a massive vacancy in the legislative branch’s leadership.
President Mahama submitted the structural changes to Parliament through the Speaker in accordance with Article 78(1) of the 1992 Constitution.

The President reassigned Kenneth Gilbert Adjei from Works and Housing to the Ministry of Defence. This critical post had remained vacant since the tragic August 2025 military helicopter crash.
Following Adjei’s move to Defence, Ahmed Ibrahim has been shifted to take over the Ministry of Works, Housing, and Water Resources.
In a highly notable promotion, Klottey Korle legislator Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has been nominated as the Minister-designate for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation.
