Former Government Spokesperson on Governance and Security, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, has leveled serious allegations against President John Dramani Mahama, claiming that the President intends to fulfill a campaign promise to recruit NDC loyalists into the security services. This alleged plan is said to be behind the recent calls by some NDC Members of Parliament to review the maximum recruitment age for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

The debate surrounding the recruitment age for the GAF has sparked intense discussion, with some NDC MPs advocating for an extension of the age limit to 30 years or more. Dr. Boakye-Danquah, however, is opposed to this idea, arguing that the current system is perfect and needs no review. According to him, the current age requirement ensures that recruits are physically fit, mentally sharp, and less exposed to social vices.

Dr. Boakye-Danquah emphasized that recruiting individuals above 30 years into the military could pose significant health and disciplinary risks. He cited potential issues with high or low blood pressure, addictions, and excessive exposure to social vices as reasons why the current age limit should be maintained.

The NDC MPs, led by Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor and Minister for Communication, Digital Innovation, and Technology, Samuel Nartey George, have argued that the current limit unfairly disqualifies capable and physically fit individuals in their 30s. They have hinted at the possibility of legal action if the GAF refuses to review the existing maximum age requirement.

Dr. Boakye-Danquah believes that the proposal to review the recruitment age is politically motivated, aimed at fulfilling President Mahama’s campaign promise. “I am deeply troubled that President Mahama wants to fulfill a particular campaign promise that he gave, which is the fact that when he was campaigning to become president of the Republic of Ghana, he said… he will recruit children of his political party to come into the security system,” he alleged ³ ⁴.

The outcome of this debate remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – the discussion surrounding the recruitment age for the GAF has sparked a heated debate in Ghana’s political landscape
