Korle – Bu Teaching Hospital

The Management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has called on Ghanaian musician Mzbel to assist an ongoing investigation into claims that her relative died after allegedly being unable to secure a hospital bed, stating that it is yet to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The hospital said it is treating the allegations with the utmost seriousness and has already initiated steps to verify the facts, including attempts to engage Mzbel and her family.

The clarification follows the circulation of a social media video in which the musician alleged that her relative passed away because of the unavailability of a bed at Ghana’s premier referral hospital (KBTH). The allegations have reignited public debate about the country’s longstanding “no bed syndrome” and emergency healthcare delivery

“Every allegation relating to patient care deserves careful investigation, and establishing the facts remains essential before any conclusions can be reached.”Management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH)

The hospital said management became aware of the video after it began circulating widely on social media and immediately commenced efforts to ascertain what transpired.

According to the hospital, investigators are seeking to determine whether the deceased was formally referred to Korle Bu and denied admission upon arrival or whether the patient had not yet been transferred to the facility and was instead advised to wait until a bed became available.

Management explained that obtaining these details is necessary to establish an accurate account of the incident and determine whether hospital protocols were followed.

The statement further disclosed that, as of the time it was issued, hospital officials had not been able to engage directly with Mzbel or members of the bereaved family to verify the circumstances surrounding the case.

Consequently, the hospital appealed to the musician to provide information that would facilitate a comprehensive investigation into the allegations.

“Clarifying the sequence of events will enable the hospital to conduct a fair, transparent and professional review of the concerns that have been raised.”Management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH)

Korle Bu Reaffirms Emergency Care Policy

Beyond responding to the allegations, Korle Bu used the opportunity to reiterate its commitment to providing emergency medical care in accordance with national policy.

Management explained that following directives issued by President John Dramani Mahama during the 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA), public hospitals have been instructed not to refuse emergency patients.

The hospital indicated that its governing Board subsequently directed management to ensure strict compliance with the policy, a directive that was later reinforced by the Minister for Health.

According to the statement, management has consistently reminded all clinical and emergency departments of their obligation to provide emergency care in line with national requirements.

It further stressed that any deliberate refusal to attend to an emergency patient would constitute a serious breach of established hospital policy and would attract thorough investigation.

The hospital also disclosed that, in addition to reinforcing emergency care directives, both the Board and management have acquired additional beds and other facilities aimed at reducing bed shortages and improving patient accommodation.

Patients Encouraged to Use Official Complaint Channels

While investigations continue, Korle Bu reminded patients and their relatives that multiple channels have been established to receive complaints relating to healthcare delivery.

According to management, concerns can be reported through the hospital’s telephone exchange, direct calls to its complaints line, the complaints portal on the hospital’s website and QR codes displayed across the facility.

The hospital explained that complaints submitted through these official mechanisms are investigated promptly, allowing concerns to be addressed in a structured manner while supporting continuous improvement in service delivery.

Management said the complaint procedures are designed not only to facilitate timely resolution of grievances but also to strengthen accountability across the institution.

Hospital administrators encouraged patients and their families to make use of these formal reporting systems whenever they experience service lapses or have concerns regarding patient care.

Commitment to Quality Healthcare

Korle Bu further reaffirmed its commitment to providing safe, timely and quality healthcare services to the public despite operational challenges often associated with managing one of the country’s busiest referral hospitals.

The hospital noted that feedback from patients remains an important component of efforts to improve healthcare delivery and ensure that identified shortcomings are addressed appropriately.

Healthcare delivery at major referral hospitals has increasingly come under public scrutiny following concerns over congestion, bed shortages and pressure on emergency services, particularly as referrals from health facilities across the country continue to rise.

The recent allegations have once again drawn attention to these systemic challenges and renewed calls for continued investment in hospital infrastructure and capacity

“Strengthening public confidence requires transparent investigations, responsive complaint systems and sustained improvements in healthcare delivery.”Management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH)

Condolences Extended to Bereaved Family

As investigations proceed, the Management of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital extended its condolences to the bereaved family and reiterated its commitment to establishing the facts surrounding the unfortunate incident in a fair, transparent and professional manner.

The hospital maintained that while public concerns over patient care are taken seriously, determining the exact circumstances of the case remains essential to ensuring accountability and protecting the integrity of healthcare delivery.

The outcome of the hospital’s investigation is expected to clarify whether the patient’s death resulted from the alleged unavailability of a bed or whether other circumstances contributed to the incident.

Until then, management says it will continue engaging relevant parties while pursuing a thorough fact finding process aimed at providing answers to both the bereaved family and the Ghanaians.
