Ghanaian singer and songwriter Dennis Nana Dwamena, popularly known as KiDi, has opened up about the challenges he faced growing up, saying he had to take on parental responsibilities for his younger siblings at an early age.
Speaking on the Konnected Minds Podcast, the “Say Cheese” hitmaker said his childhood was difficult, particularly because his family moved frequently, forcing him to change schools and repeatedly adjust to new environments.
According to KiDi, the challenges at home also meant he had to mature quickly and take on responsibilities beyond his age.
He said his mother was going through personal challenges at the time, leaving him to care for his siblings.
“I had to be both the mother and father for my siblings growing up,” KiDi said.
Despite the difficulties, he said his decision to pursue music was driven by his passion rather than the financial rewards associated with the industry.
“I didn’t enter music because of the money, it was the passion for me,” he said.
KiDi also shared advice for young musicians seeking record deals, urging them to understand the terms of any agreement before signing.
“Read the fine print when signing deals,” he advised young artistes considering contracts with record labels.
He said he was fortunate to have his brother’s guidance when he signed his first deal, which helped him navigate the process.
KiDi has since established himself as one of Ghana’s leading contemporary musicians, with songs including Say Cheese gaining international attention.
