President John Dramani Mahama says Ghana is exploring the possibility of co-hosting the Africa Cup of Nations in the future, with a joint bid alongside Côte d’Ivoire among the options under consideration. He linked the idea to a broader push to upgrade stadium infrastructure and position the country to host major CAF competitions again.
Mahama’s plans
During an inspection of Ho Stadium, Mahama said his government wants at least five stadiums in Ghana to meet CAF standards over the next few years. He added that the redevelopment drive is meant to improve the country’s ability to attract and stage international tournaments.

Ghana last hosted AFCON in 2008, when matches were played in Accra, Kumasi, Sekondi and Tamale. Mahama said the passage of time since that successful edition suggests the country may now be ready for another chance.
He also floated the idea of partnering with Côte d’Ivoire, saying Ghana could work “in conjunction with our neighbours” to host the tournament together. That would follow the broader trend of joint hosting in African football, where countries combine resources to meet tournament demands.
The proposal remains at the level of ambition rather than a formal bid, but it signals a clear policy direction toward sports infrastructure renewal. If the stadium upgrades are completed, Ghana could strengthen its case for hosting AFCON again, either alone or with a regional partner.
