The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has launched an aggressive fiscal crackdown, announcing that it is set to lock up shops, commercial centers, and advertising properties over massive arrears in municipal dues.

According to an official statement issued by the Assembly on June 19, 2026, a highly trained Revenue Mobilization Task Force has been deployed across the capital.

The specialized task force will conduct unannounced inspections at business premises and advertising hubs to verify records.

Ratepayers must immediately produce valid receipts for Business Operating Permits (BOPs), Property Rates, Outdoor Advertising Fees, and Rent.

The AMA’s Revenue Accountant, Mr. Henry Asare, issued a stern warning to defaulting operators, making it clear that the Assembly will not tolerate excuses from business managers or their agents.

Business owners have been advised to keep physical copies of their payment receipts on-site to avoid immediate penalties and the locking of their doors.

To deter non-compliance, the AMA has indicated that defaulters face legal action.

Under the local governance laws, offending operators can face criminal prosecution. Summary convictions carry penalties of up to 100 penalty units, a prison sentence ranging from 30 days to six months, or both.

To streamline the process, the Assembly collaborated with the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) to train its revenue collectors.

The training rectifies previous financial inconsistencies caused by outdated billing codes, ensuring smooth digital reconciliation when the task force arrives at shops.

All commercial entities within the metropolis are urged to settle their outstanding balances immediately using authorized AMA channels to avoid public embarrassment and business closure.
