Ghana’s Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has revealed that Zipline, a medical drone delivery company, has been delivering non-essential items, including condoms, mosquito nets, and education materials, instead of critical medical supplies. The company was contracted to deliver essential medical items to far-to-reach areas, but an investigation found that only 1% of deliveries were actual medical supplies, while 90% were non-essential items.

Member of Parliament for Lambussie, Titus Beyuo, disclosed these findings, stating that Zipline’s services were only reaching 12% of the targeted facilities, mostly in remote areas. The government is reviewing Zipline’s operations to ensure value for money, with Minister Akandoh emphasizing ongoing discussions to reassess the contract.

The controversy has sparked calls for the contract to be terminated, with Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga describing it as a waste of state resources. Zipline is reportedly closing three operational centers due to an outstanding GH¢174 million debt owed by the government.

Mr. Akandoh explained that the government is engaging Zipline over the range of services provided and outstanding debts, emphasising the need to ensure value for money.

“We think that there must be value for money, therefore we are engaging them,” he said.

The comments come amid reports that Zipline has closed three of its operational centres over an outstanding GH¢174 million owed by the government.

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has also called for the full termination of the contract, describing the drone delivery scheme as a mismanagement of public funds that has failed to provide value for money.
