Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup Preliminary Round 2 clash. Bakasu’s precise finish in the 47th minute proved to be the decisive moment, giving Wydad a narrow but valuable lead heading into the return leg.
The match was intense and evenly matched until the Moroccan side capitalized on a defensive lapse from Kotoko. Bakasu unleashed a ferocious right-footed strike into the roof of the net, injecting energy into the Moroccan side and putting pressure on the Ghanaian hosts to respond quickly.
However, the game’s complexion changed dramatically in the 49th minute when Kotoko’s goalkeeper Camara was sent off for handling the ball outside the penalty area. This forced Kotoko to play with 10 men, and despite their valiant efforts to maintain their shape and create some chances, they couldn’t find the equalizer. Wydad defended solidly to protect their slim advantage, knowing an away goal could prove critical in the upcoming second leg.
The victory gives Wydad the upper hand, and they will look to build on this lead when the two teams meet again in Casablanca on Friday, October 24, 2025. Kotoko will have to regroup and fight hard to overturn the deficit and keep their campaign alive.
