The Western Region is one step closer to achieving better healthcare for its residents with the launch of a GH₵3 million project to establish the region’s first Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The project, championed by Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson, aims to provide critical care services to patients in the region, reducing the need for referrals to distant facilities.
For years, residents of the Western Region have had to travel to Cape Coast or Accra to access ICU services, often resulting in avoidable loss of life. The region’s lack of ICU capacity has put a significant strain on its healthcare system, highlighting the need for a local solution.
The project has already received support from the 14 Municipal, Metropolitan, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the region, who have pledged GH₵10,000 each towards the project. The Regional Minister has also made a personal pledge of GH₵100,000.
To enable broad-based participation in funding the vital health infrastructure, donation platforms have been created. Those willing to contribute can send their donations via Stanbic Bank’s account number 9040073625004 or MTN MoMo number 0556709065, both with the account name Takoradi Hospital ICU project.
The establishment of the ICU is expected to significantly improve healthcare outcomes in the Western Region. According to Dr. George Peprah, Medical Superintendent of the Takoradi Hospital, where the facility will be located, the ICU will provide critical care services to patients, reducing the need for referrals and improving survival rates.
