Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expressed his disappointment with his team’s performance after the 60th minute mark in their 2-1 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion. Despite a strong start, City crumbled in the second half, allowing James Milner’s penalty kick and Brajan Gruda’s goal to secure Brighton’s win. Erling Haaland had given City the lead in the 34th minute.
Guardiola praised his team’s efforts in the first hour but criticized their inability to maintain their level of play after conceding the equalizing goal. “I like many, many things we are doing. Like against Tottenham, we started well. I like many things the team has done here today but we were unable to win. When we conceded the goal we stopped playing,” he said in a post-game interview.
The loss marks City’s second consecutive defeat, following their 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the previous round. Guardiola specifically pointed out that after conceding, City’s play deteriorated, with the team resorting to long balls instead of maintaining possession. He also praised midfielder Rodri’s 90-minute performance, his first league start in almost a year.
City will look to regroup and bounce back from this defeat when they face Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium on September 14 after the international break.
