The West African Mills Company (WAMCO), a cocoa processing firm in Ghana, is seeking more raw cocoa to boost production and create jobs. The company’s current production capacity is operating at only 30% due to a shortage of raw cocoa beans.
The Chairman of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, has assured that the board is working to ensure local processors like WAMCO have enough beans to expand output and support Ghana’s industrialization efforts. WAMCO’s Deputy Managing Director, Dr. Daniel Boakye Danquah, welcomed the assurance, stating that the company’s main challenge is obtaining sufficient cocoa beans for processing.
The Ghana government aims to increase local cocoa processing to 50% by processing more beans domestically, rather than exporting them raw. This move is expected to triple Ghana’s cocoa earnings and create more jobs.
WAMCO, which is co-owned by the Ghanaian government and Hosta International AG from Switzerland, plans to invest $5 million in upgrading its cocoa processing facilities to increase productivity and exports.
