Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has commissioned 265 new prison officers, emphasizing the government’s commitment to transforming the Ghana Prisons Service into a humane, secure, and genuinely reformatory institution. The newly commissioned officers, comprising 162 males and 103 females, were urged to serve with integrity, compassion, and discipline.
The Vice President highlighted the government’s efforts to improve the welfare of inmates and address chronic issues of malnutrition and overcrowding. She announced an increase in the daily feeding fee for inmates from GHS 1.80 to GHS 5.00, benefiting over 14,000 inmates. The government has also launched initiatives to turn “incarceration into innovation,” providing inmates with marketable skills and work experience to aid their reintegration into society.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang commended the Prisons Service for its innovative approach to rehabilitation, particularly its agricultural projects, and announced plans to create large-scale manufacturing facilities for textiles, furniture, and construction products. The Vice President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the Prisons Service, stating that it will continue to benefit from infrastructure and capacity-building initiatives.
She also praised the Director General of Prisons, Mrs. Patience Baffour-Bonnie, for her leadership, and commended the Regimental Band for its spirited display during the parade.
Three officer cadets received special awards for outstanding performance.
