The US Deputy Assistant Secretary for West Africa, William Stevens, recently visited the Accra Sports Stadium as part of his trip to Ghana. While there, he met with Ghanaian government officials, business leaders, and stakeholders from academia, technology, culture, and sports to discuss strengthening cooperation between the US and Ghana across multiple sectors.

Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, highlighted Ghana’s interest in attracting US investment in sports tourism, creative industries, and technology, particularly in the lead-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada. Ghana will play two of its matches in Boston and Philadelphia, cities with significant Ghanaian diaspora communities.

Adams emphasized the importance of education, sports, trade, and cultural exchange in driving the partnership between Ghana and the US, citing a $3.8 billion bilateral trade value in 2024. Ghana’s Ambassador to the US, Victor Emmanuel Smith, has pledged the Embassy’s full support to help make Ghana’s World Cup participation memorable.

On his arrival, the General Secretary of PFAG, Tony Baffour, took time to introduce association members such as PFAG President Samuel Osei Kufuor, former Black Stars player Kwame Ayew, Under-20 World Cup winner Emmanuel Agyeman Badu, and his colleagues Derek Boateng and Abdul Majid Warris, who were present at the event.

As a key part of the visit, Will Stevens took a tour of the core areas of the Accra Sports Stadium and the PFAG office after engaging with the former players on his arrival.

Stevens expressed satisfaction with the huge impact Ghana is making in global football and recounted moments from football meetings between the two countries at the World Cups in 2006, 2010, and 2014, respectively.

He appreciated the reception he received from the team and said he was looking forward to welcoming Ghana to the US for the 2026 World Cup. He further assured that the embassy would be working closely with the people and government of Ghana to ensure that Ghanaians have an exciting experience at the World Cup.

He kicked off his visit with a town hall meeting at the US Embassy, visited the Google AI office in Ghana, before arriving at the Accra Sports Stadium to engage with the National Sports Authority.
