National Chairman of the United Party, Abubakar Saddique Boniface, has responded to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) threat to challenge the party’s name in court. In an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues, Boniface expressed excitement at the prospect of a court battle, arguing that the NPP cannot claim ownership of the name “United Party” simply because of its historical association with the party.
The NPP had accused Alan Kyerematen’s United Party of attempting to rob the party of its political heritage and creating confusion among Ghanaians. However, Boniface countered that the name “United Party” is not unique to the NPP, citing the example of many people naming their children Mohammed without claiming ownership of the name. “In fact, I will be happy he takes it to court so that he can tell me if as a Muslim, I give birth to my child, I can’t name my child Mohammed,” he said.
Boniface further explained that just as many people share the same name without one person having exclusive rights to it, the NPP cannot claim sole ownership of the name “United Party”. He added that the NPP should “stay quiet in their corner” and not create problems for themselves.
The NPP is considering legal action to stop Alan Kyerematen’s party from using the name “United Party”, citing potential breach of the law and confusion among voters. According to the NPP, the United Party’s use of the name could distort the party’s political history and create confusion in the minds of Ghanaians.
Alan Kyerematen officially launched the United Party on Thursday, October 16, 2025, describing the formation of the party as the dawn of a new era and a people’s movement to unite the nation beyond partisan divides. “Today, we lift Ghana UP, united in purpose, driven by integrity, and committed to prosperity for all,” he declared.
