The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has vowed to intensify pressure on the government to take decisive action against illegal gold mining, popularly known as galamsey. During a fact-finding visit to the Birim River in the Eastern Region, TUC Secretary-General Joshua Ansah expressed deep concern about the deteriorating state of Ghana’s water bodies due to galamsey, describing the practice as a “heinous crime.”

The TUC has sharply criticized the government’s recent stakeholder engagements with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), arguing that such discussions have failed to yield any meaningful or lasting results. Mr. Ansah emphasized that the government must act decisively and immediately to stop galamsey, as the practice threatens the country’s water resources, environment, and livelihoods.

The country’s highly centralized land administration system is a major obstacle in the fight against galamsey, limiting the involvement of traditional authorities who could play a critical role in curbing the menace. The TUC believes the government has not taken sufficient action to address galamsey, despite growing public frustration. The TUC will outline measures to support the fight against galamsey in the coming weeks, aiming to exert maximum pressure on the government and its agencies to act decisively.

The TUC’s warning adds to growing public frustration over the government’s handling of illegal mining. The government has disclosed that the Attorney-General is prosecuting close to 1,500 cases of illegal mining, which are currently at various stages of prosecution. The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has also confiscated several excavators, changfang machines, water pumping machines, and generators since January 2025.
