Leadership of Ghana’s largest private transport union, Ghana Private Road Transport Union(G.P.R.T.U.) has vowed to withdraw its task-force that was put in place weeks ago to ensure fairness in road transport.

Lack of enough commercial cars in the country especially the capital city of Accra continue to grow from bad to worse. Operators have therefore taken advantage of the situation to abuse the system of fare and routes. An issue that eventually got the transport ministry summoning stakeholders both in the private and public sectors for solution.

Hitherto, the GPRTU announced a task-force to ensure transport operators take fair fares and also desist from breaking existing routes into pieces at the detriment of the commuter. With hopes and expectations of attracting the transport ministry’s synergy, it(GPRTU) chanced on a communique by the ministry to resource State Transport Corporation(STC) to fill the gap. It is this that has triggered the acclaimed transport union to call its task-force effective Friday, 6th February, 2026, since government seem not recognizing its contribution.

The task-force’s operation among other things has seen some transport operators under protection already.

In an exclusive interview, Head of Public Relations, Alhaji Abass Ibrahim Moro said the private sector covers around 90% of the country’s transport needs. For this, anyone takes their contributions far granted at their own risk.

Being the first and largest transport union, every mishap on the road is virtually attributed to them and for that matter, its longstanding resolve in helping to deal with related road safety issues.

“Say NO to 8 road deaths a day”
Mr. Moro used the opportunity to praise National Safety Campaign(NASACA) for its role in road safety advocacy and other aspects of safety in the country and beyond.

NASACA is out there leading a road safety campaign termed “Say NO to 8 road deaths a day” and Alhaji Moro said it’s a smart and laudable initiative to help save life and property on the road. He so pledged the union’s support and called on individuals, corporate entities to get on board for the kind of good move it is. What more, it’s result oriented.
