Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, appointed as Greater Accra Regional Minister in January 2025, has been working to transform Accra into a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive region. With a background as a Member of Parliament for Shai-Osudoku Constituency, Hon. Ocloo brings valuable experience to her new role.
She has reintroduced National Sanitation Day, observed on the last Friday of every month, to tackle waste management and filth in the city. By linking sanitation services to cultural celebrations, such as Homowo-themed clean-up campaigns in Ga Mashie, she’s promoting community involvement and joint responsibility for public sanitation.
To enhance community safety, Hon. Ocloo obtained 3,000 streetlights from the Ministry of Energy, distributing 100 units to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies. This initiative aims to improve visibility, curb crime, and make the environs safer. She’s also administered assemblies to curb the uncontrolled increase of billboards, emphasizing order, safety, and eco-aesthetics.
The Minister has taken a strong stance on protecting Greater Accra’s natural resources. She requested developers who unlawfully filled parts of the Kpone-Laloi Lagoon to refill it at their own cost and led a demolition exercise at the Sakumo Ramsar wetlands to eliminate illegal structures.
In education and youth development, Hon. Ocloo collaborated with the Ministry of Education to commission an astro-turf sports facility in Weija-Gbawe, promoting youth engagement in sports and talent development. She’s also extended support to schools like Labone Senior High School, ensuring institutions receive necessary assistance to enhance learning environments.
Her commitment to accountable governance and social welfare is evident in her provision of over 500 hot meals to head porters and deprived persons in areas like Tudu and Cocoa Marketing Board territories. Hon. Ocloo has also publicly admonished non-performing officials, emphasizing accountability and discipline.
Since assuming office, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo has demonstrated a leadership style that combines community involvement with rigorous governance standards. Her initiatives indicate a balance of sympathy, discipline, and visionary traits, offering hope for Greater Accra to become Ghana’s administrative hub and a model for sustainable and inclusive urban planning.
