In response to the tragedy, the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has launched a full investigation, deploying a team of safety inspectors and Navy personnel to determine the cause and hold those responsible accountable. To ensure accountability and prevent future incidents, the GMA will form a high-level committee to guide enforcement reforms.
Furthermore, the GMA has announced enhanced safety measures on Volta Lake. These measures include impounding boats that violate safety regulations and prosecuting operators of non-compliant vessels. “Do not board any boat that is visibly overloaded or lacks lifejackets,” the GMA urged in a statement, appealing to the public to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety.
The GMA extended its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and the people of Kete Krachi, describing the incident as a heart-wrenching national tragedy. The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safer water transport across all Volta Lake communities and pledged to uncover the root causes of the disaster and implement stronger preventive measures to prevent such tragedies from occurring again.
