A tragic stampede at El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra during a military recruitment exercise has resulted in 12 deaths, with several others injured and receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital. The incident occurred when thousands of young Ghanaians gathered at the stadium, desperate to secure enlistment into the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

The stampede was reportedly triggered by poor crowd control, an overwhelming turnout, and intense jostling at entry points. The situation got out of hand as recruits pushed to get into the stadium, leading to the tragic loss of life.

The Ghana Armed Forces has extended the recruitment deadline by one week due to technical challenges on the recruitment portal. An investigation is expected to be launched to determine the circumstances leading to the incident and prevent similar tragedies in future recruitment exercises.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the 37 Military Hospital morgue, and security personnel have cordoned off the area to maintain order and facilitate rescue operations.
