A devastating stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra during the Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise has claimed the lives of six young women, with several others injured. The incident occurred around 6:20 a.m. when a surge of applicants breached security protocols and rushed into the stadium.
Pusiga MP, Ayamba Ayii Laadi, has sparked controversy by attributing the tragedy to divine will, stating, “Today is the day Almighty Allah ordained for them to die. Even if we had all the presidents of the world sitting there, once today was ordained for them to die, they would”. Her comments have been met with shock and outrage on social media.
The Ghana Armed Forces has suspended the recruitment exercise pending an investigation into the incident. President John Mahama has expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, extending condolences to the bereaved families and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
Six young women died in the stampede, and 28 others were injured, with 12 in critical condition and 5 in ICU. The incident has raised concerns about crowd management and safety measures during large-scale recruitment exercises.
