The Ghana National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA) has announced that guns surrendered during the ongoing amnesty period will be destroyed. The amnesty, which runs from December 1, 2025, to January 15, 2026, allows individuals to voluntarily surrender unregistered or illicit firearms without fear of prosecution.
The Deputy Executive Secretary of NACSA, Mohammed Gali Salam, stated that the commission will use a weapon destruction machine to destroy the surrendered guns, rather than burning them. He urged individuals with illicit arms to take advantage of the amnesty and surrender their weapons, emphasizing that failure to do so would lead to strict enforcement of the law.
The amnesty period is part of the government’s efforts to reduce the proliferation of small arms in Ghana and promote a culture of peace and safety. The initiative has been welcomed by security analysts, who caution that the program’s success depends heavily on public cooperation and logistical readiness at collection centers.
