The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has formally presented the Democracy Cup trophy to President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House in Accra, setting the stage for the highly anticipated football event. This year’s edition of the Democracy Cup is scheduled for Friday, September 5, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, where Accra Hearts of Oak will face off against Accra Great Olympics.

During the presentation ceremony, President Mahama expressed his deep appreciation for the initiative, commending Parliament for organizing the Democracy Cup to reinforce and celebrate Ghana’s democratic values. He emphasized that democracy encompasses more than just elections, highlighting the importance of accountability, inclusion, fairness, and justice. “It is about creating a society where every Ghanaian can aspire and achieve regardless of their background,” he said, reminding leaders to govern with transparency and humility.

President Mahama underscored the critical role young people play in democracy’s survival, stating, “Democracy requires our vigilance and our participation. This Democracy Cup is mighty because it speaks directly to the youth.” He drew parallels between democracy and football, pointing out that both require rules, fairness, discipline, and respect to foster unity and progress.

The Democracy Cup is a parliamentary initiative designed to promote civic engagement and national unity through football. The winner of this year’s edition will earn the opportunity to compete in a three-team tournament in the United States in May 2026. The event will begin with a curtain-raiser match between the Legislature and the Judiciary, followed by the main match between Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics.

The Speaker of Parliament emphasized that the Democracy Cup aims to bridge the gap between Parliament and the people, foster trust in state institutions, and renew public confidence in democratic governance. President Mahama accepted the trophy not as a personal honor but on behalf of all Ghanaians, encouraging young people to cherish, nurture, and defend democracy with courage and conviction.
