A devastating stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra during the Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise has claimed the lives of six young applicants, with several others injured. The incident occurred around 6:20 a.m. when a sudden surge of applicants breached security protocols and rushed into the stadium ahead of the scheduled screening.
Acting Defence Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has confirmed the tragic news, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives. The Ghana Armed Forces has set up a board to investigate the incident, and the recruitment exercise has been suspended until further notice.
The casualties include six applicants confirmed dead, with five currently in Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 12 in critical condition, and 28 applicants rushed to 37 Military Hospital for treatment.
President John Mahama has visited the 37 Military Hospital to commiserate with the injured victims and assess the situation. The Ghana Armed Forces has extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and assured the public that necessary measures are being taken to prevent a recurrence
