Professor Alidu Seidu, Executive Secretary of the Water Resources Commission, has emerged victorious in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primary for the Tamale Central Constituency. The by-election, scheduled for September 30, aims to fill the seat left vacant after the tragic death of the constituency’s MP, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, in a helicopter crash on August 6.
The primary election, held at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale, saw Prof. Seidu secure 840 votes out of a total of 1,511 cast, defeating 11 other contenders. The full results are as follows ¹ ²:

- Abdul Hannan Gundado: 536 votes
- Dr. Seidu Fiter Mohammed: 44 votes
- Ing. Aliu Abdul Hamid: 23 votes

- Dr. Abdul Rahaman Rashid: 9 votes
- Sadat Haruna: 9 votes
- Alhassan Osman Gomda (Naa Simani): 7 votes
- Shamima Yakubu: 5 votes
- Mariama Naana Salifu: 5 votes
- Prof. Abdul Razak Abubakari: 4 votes
- Mulaika Salisu: 3 votes
With this win, Prof. Seidu will represent the NDC in the upcoming by-election, vying for the Tamale Central seat. The NDC has historically held a strong presence in the constituency, and Prof. Seidu’s victory positions him to potentially continue the party’s legacy.
