President John Mahama has stated that he will sign the anti-LGBTQ+ bill into law if it is passed by Parliament and sent to his office. He made this declaration on Tuesday, November 18, during a courtesy visit by the Christian Council of Ghana ¹ ² ³.
Mahama emphasized that his position aligns with the Christian Council’s stance on family and social values, stating, “If the Parliament of the people of Ghana endorses the bill, votes on it and passes it, and it comes to me as President, I will sign it”.
The bill, which was reintroduced in Parliament by a group of bipartisan MPs, seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities and their promotion, advocacy, or funding. It proposes up to three years’ imprisonment for engaging in same-sex acts and up to ten years for promoting or financing LGBTQ+ activities ⁴ ¹ ².
The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has assured that President Mahama is fully prepared to assent to the bill, stating, “I have personally spoken with the president, and he has no hesitation to sign if this Parliament should pass the bill.
