President John Dramani Mahama has directed the use of locally produced poultry in the school feeding programme as part of efforts to boost Ghana’s poultry industry. This initiative is part of the Feed Ghana Programme, aimed at reducing the country’s reliance on imported chicken and promoting local food production.
Under the programme, selected Senior High Schools will establish poultry and livestock farms to support their feeding programmes. The government plans to distribute three million birds across all 276 constituencies, with each constituency receiving 10,000 birds. Beneficiaries will receive 50 birds, along with technical guidance and key inputs to ensure sustainability.
The initiative is expected to create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and improve food security, particularly in rural areas. The government has also launched the Nkoko Nkitinkiti project, which aims to support small and medium-scale poultry farmers and increase local production.
President Mahama emphasized the importance of reducing Ghana’s poultry imports, which currently stand at $400 million annually. The government plans to establish feed mills, veterinary services, and poultry processing centres to support the industry.
The initiative has been welcomed by experts, who stress the need for careful planning and implementation to ensure its success.
