The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested 77 suspects during a special anti-drug operation carried out in Tamale and Savelugu.
The exercise, conducted by the Special Operations Team known as “Red Maria,” took place on Monday, March 23, 2026, at approximately 9:30 p.m., involving 33 personnel.
The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by the Ghana Police Service to clamp down on drug trafficking and related criminal activities in the region.
According to the police, the operation targeted several identified drug hotspots, beginning in Lamashegu, where one suspect was arrested. The team later moved to the Aboabo Market area, where another suspect was apprehended with a powdered substance suspected to be cocaine.

Further intelligence led officers to NOBISCO, where an alleged supplier was arrested; however, a search of his residence did not yield any incriminating items.
The operation was then extended to Savelugu, where a major raid at a known drug peddling enclave resulted in the arrest of 74 additional suspects.
Police retrieved several items during the operation, including seven motorbikes, a Toyota Camry vehicle, quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, and 10 sachets of Tramadol.
All suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations. Authorities say those found culpable will be arraigned before the court.
The Northern Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to fighting drug-related offences and ensuring public safety, while urging the public to support their efforts by providing timely and credible information.
