The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the 2024 elections can be attributed largely to its own governance failures rather than any extraordinary efforts by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). This is according to Dr. Justice Yamson, former General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA).
Dr. Yamson emphasized that Ghanaians had lost confidence in the government due to hardships, corruption, and governance failures. The election results were more of a protest against the ruling party than an endorsement of the NDC’s performance.
Some key factors that contributed to the NPP’s defeat include:
- Widespread public discontent with the government’s handling of the economy
- The party’s failure to address pressing issues, such as unemployment and inflation
- Economic pressures and shifting political dynamics that favored the opposition
Dr. Yamson urged both parties to draw the right lessons from the outcome. The NPP must reflect on the reasons behind its rejection and learn from its mistakes, while the NDC should focus on delivering tangible results in government rather than assuming victory came from its own brilliance.
