The Spokesperson for Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, aspiring flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yaw Opoku Mensah, in an interview on Morning Focus, on MBN TV to emphasize that the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy was designed to create a fair and inclusive educational system that serves both the rich and the poor.

The decision to locate the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) head office at East Legon was a deliberate move to promote inclusivity and social balance within Ghana’s education sector. By positioning the TVET head office in this location, the initiative aims to bring both groups together, and replicating such projects across the country will help bridge the gap.

A renewed sense of confidence exists among learners under Dr. Adutwum’s leadership, with significant impact from Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) initiatives in basic and senior high schools. During Dr. Adutwum’s tenure as Deputy Minister of Education, many basic and senior high schools benefited from STEM initiatives that were once limited to well-resourced schools. “For the first time, basic and secondary schools that never had access to STEM education are now being empowered with modern tools and laboratories,” Opoku Mensah stated.

As Minister of Education, Dr. Adutwum has achieved notable success, including the implementation of the Free SHS policy, introduction of the Double Track System to maximize infrastructure, and promotion of STEM education nationwide. He has also advanced Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs to equip students with practical skills for the workforce. His dedication and innovations in the education sector earned him the Minister of the Year 2024 award from the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS).

Dr. Adutwum believes that education is key to breaking the cycle of poverty in Ghana. Investing in education, particularly in STEM and TVET, will equip young people with practical skills to drive industrial growth and innovation. His vision for education focuses on investing in STEM education, providing technical and vocational training, and ensuring access, equity, and excellence in education for all Ghanaian children.

By prioritizing education, Dr. Adutwum aims to create a more prosperous and equitable society. Opoku Mensah urged support for Dr. Adutwum’s bid to lead the NPP and eventually become president, saying this would ensure the continuation of ongoing education reforms.
