The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Sagnarigu District Office in the Northern Region has successfully piloted a 24-hour registration exercise at Jirsonaayilli. The initiative, launched on August 14, 2025, aimed to expand access to health insurance services for residents, particularly those engaged in farming and economic activities.
Within a span of five hours, from 4:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., 35 new members registered, and 485 others renewed their NHIS cards. The extended-hour initiative allows community members to register or renew their membership at their convenience, accommodating those who cannot visit offices during regular working hours due to other commitments. During the exercise, NHIA staff educated residents on the NHIS benefit package, members’ rights and responsibilities, and the importance of maintaining active membership. The Sagnarigu District’s 24-hour registration exercise is expected to serve as a model for the Northern Region and beyond, contributing to the Authority’s goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030. According to the Acting District Manager, Mr. Abdallah Shaibu, the pilot provided valuable lessons that will guide the district and the Northern Region in implementing similar initiatives in the future.
The success of this pilot exercise marks a significant step forward in strengthening healthcare access and advancing Ghana’s commitment to UHC. By increasing access to health insurance services, the NHIS aims to improve the overall well-being of Ghanaians, particularly vulnerable populations.
