Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has described the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary minority as “minuscule” following their loss in the Akwatia by-election and their decision not to contest the Tamale Central by-election. Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, Ayariga noted that the NPP’s numbers had shrunk to 87, while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) majority had grown to 185.
The House reconvened on Tuesday after its recess, with two new MPs, Prof. Alidu Seidu and Bernard Bediako, being sworn in as Tamale Central MP and Akwatia MP, respectively. Ayariga emphasized that the NDC’s super majority would balloon to 185, and with the support of four independent members, they would become a “gargantuan majority”.
Ayariga also praised the NDC government’s performance, saying “so far, so excellent”. He highlighted the impact of the work done during the previous parliamentary session, including the budget, laws, and policies passed. However, he noted the need to address youth unemployment, emphasizing that the government must create jobs through its laws and policies.
