The Deputy National Elections Director of the NDC, Rashid Tanko Computer, has rejected New Juaben South MP Michael Okyere Baafi’s apology after the NPP lost the Akwatia by-election. Baafi had earlier vowed to resign if the NPP failed to win the election, stating, “If NPP loses this Akwatia by-election, I will resign as MP, mark my words.”
Following the election results, which saw the NDC’s Bernard Baidoo secure 18,199 votes against the NPP’s Solomon Kwame Asumadu’s 15,235, Baafi apologized for his comment, saying, “I apologise to Ghanaians for my resignation comment. I went too far.” However, Tanko Computer insists that Baafi must honor his pledge and resign or publicly apologize in Parliament.
“We are going to Michael Okyere Baafi’s constituency. He has apologised, but we are not accepting his apology. He must resign. If he doesn’t resign, Ghanaians will not take politicians seriously,” Tanko Computer said, emphasizing the need for politicians to be held accountable for their words. Tanko Computer also revealed that Baafi seemed confident at the collation center until the results were announced, at which point he began to perspire, realizing the NPP’s loss.
The controversy has sparked debate, with political commentator Dr. Ishmael Norman weighing in, “I want to see Honourable Baafi resign because he made this announcement. Politicians must be held to their words.” Baafi, however, has yet to respond further to the demands, leaving his future as MP uncertain.
Rashid Tanko Computer remains resolute, stating, “The gentleman made a categorical statement, ‘I will resign’. Ah, let us go and test their strength in that constituency and see whether that is a stronghold of the NPP.” The situation continues to unfold, with many watching to see if Baafi will ultimately step down.
